APPROACHING CHARACTERS AND SYMBOLS IN YOUR DREAMS
By Rosemary Watts, © 1994

Know that on some level, all characters and symbols in your dreams represent aspects of yourself. By getting to know these symbols, you may gain great insights into your own personality and garner wisdom that may be applied to your daily waking life.

1. List out significant characters and symbols from your dream.
2. After each character and symbol, write out words that describe:
  a. that character's or symbol's characteristics and qualities
  b. your relationship to that character or symbol
  c. any memories or personal associations to that character or symbol.
Try to describe them as though you are speaking with someone from another planet who has no personal reference to your images. Be very specific.
3. If you have a present relationship with any character or symbol, be specific about your current rapport (i.e., if communication is good, if there is a particular problem, etc.). If you do not have a current relationship with a character or symbol, list out the specifics regarding your previous encounters. If you knew them at a particular time in your life, also list out what you recall of what was going on in your life during that period. For example: if you dream of a friend from high school, list out the characteristics and qualities of that person, your relationship with them, any memories or association, as well as what you were experiencing at that time.
4. Then take the words you listed (characteristics and qualities) and apply them to your present situation, problems and self. Try to see as many connections between these qualities and what you are presently experiencing. It is important to always take the other dream characters and symbols back to yourself to see how they are personifying aspects of yourself.
